Right now, if your organization uses Microsoft 365, your files are being stored and processed through Microsoft’s infrastructure. You may not think about it daily, but strategically, it means someone else holds the keys to your data.
Changing that entirely is a big ask. That’s the gap our new integration is designed to bridge.
Your Nextcloud files, edited in Microsoft 365 Online
With Sendent’s new M365 Office Online integration, users can open files stored in Nextcloud directly in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) without downloading anything or switching tools. It looks like Office, it feels like Office, because it is Office.
Your file storage moves out of Microsoft’s cloud and into your own Nextcloud environment. That means you control where your data lives, who can access it, and how it’s handled, including under GDPR.
What doesn’t change: how your team works. They open files in Microsoft 365, the same way they always have.
A practical path to digital sovereignty
Most organizations that want to reduce Microsoft dependency run into the same wall. A new storage platform means new tools and new workflows, and most organizations aren’t in a position to do all of that at once. The disruption is too large to absorb in one move, so nothing moves at all.
The M365 Office Online integration offers a different approach. You move your storage out of the Microsoft cloud first. You regain control over where your data lives. The editing experience stays intact while you do it. And you keep the door open to go further, switching to a fully sovereign editor like Nextcloud Office when your organization is ready, without rebuilding your entire setup from scratch.
Also relevant: Office Online Server is being retired
Microsoft recently announced that Office Online Server will reach end of life by the end of this year. Organizations that relied on it for browser-based document editing now face a hard choice: migrate fully into Microsoft 365, or lose browser editing altogether.
This integration offers a third path. One that keeps browser-based editing alive, brings your storage into a private environment, and does not lock you further into Microsoft’s ecosystem.
Who this is for
- Organizations that want to reduce dependency on Microsoft’s cloud storage, without changing how their teams work day to day
- Teams with compliance obligations around data location and storage, particularly under GDPR
- Organizations planning a gradual move toward digital sovereignty, not a single overnight switch
- IT teams facing the retirement of Office Online Server who need a workable alternative
- Teams already on Nextcloud who want to keep using Microsoft Office for editing
It’s a particularly strong fit in organizations where Microsoft tools are deeply embedded in daily work, and where pulling them out overnight simply isn’t practical.
Available through Nextcloud partners
The M365 Office Online integration will be made available through a selected network of Nextcloud partners. More details will be announced soon.
