Sendent for Outlook offers two options for integrating secure file sharing into your email workflow: the Windows Only (VSTO) add-in and the Cross-Platform add-in. While both achieve the same core function, there are key differences to consider when choosing between them.
Windows Only add-in
- Compatibility
- Works on Windows versions of Outlook 2016, 2019 and 2021 (only in “Classic Outlook” mode).
- Not compatible with newer versions for Windows or Outlook for Mac/Web.
- Technology
- Leverages COM/VSTO technology, which Microsoft is phasing out for newer Outlook for Windows versions.
- Future-proofing
- Sendent will continue to support the VSTO add-in for as long as Microsoft supports Outlook 2016, 2019 and 2021.
- Sendent will assist users who wish to transition to the web add-in as they upgrade their Outlook versions.
Cross Platform add-in
- Compatibility
- Outlook on Windows: Microsoft 365 subscription or Outlook 2021 for Windows (with Version 1910 build 12130.20272 or later) or Outlook 2019 for Windows (with new UI enabled).
- Outlook on Mac: Microsoft 365 subscription or Outlook 2021 for Mac (with Build 16.47 or later).
- Outlook on Web: Modern Outlook UI (See the Microsoft support article Use add-ins in Outlook)
- Technology
- Built on Microsoft’s modern web framework, ensuring better performance, reliability and cross-platform availability.
- Features
- Streamlined interface, consistent experience across platforms, and focus on core functionalities like secure file sharing and upload links.
- Advanced theming options are not currently available in the web add-in.
- Future-proofing
- The recommended option for new users and those planning to upgrade Outlook.
Choosing the right version for you
- If you use an older version of Outlook for Windows and value advanced customization, the Windows Only add-in remains a viable option with our continued support.
- For everyone else, the Cross-Platform add-in is the future-proof choice, offering wider compatibility, a modern interface, and a focus on all core functionalities.
Subscription Options
- Sendent for Outlook offers Standard and Plus plans that include access to both the Windows Only and Cross-Platform add-in. This provides flexibility for users with different Outlook versions and ensures a smooth transition for existing users as they upgrade to newer Outlooks that may not support the Windows Only add-in.
